Moving from abroad
You live abroad and are moving to Nijmegen. Register in person within 5 days by making an appointment. By answering a few questions in the appointment system, you will be directed to the correct appointment for your situation.
What you need to know
- The date of the appointment will be the date of your registration with the municipality. You cannot register with a future or past date
- Everyone who needs to be registered must be personally present at the appointment, including minor children (under the age of 16)
- The appointment is standard for one person. Do you have a partner, children, or other family members? Make an appointment for each family member: in the appointment system, select the correct number under "Number of people." For example, if you have a partner and 2 children, select 4 under the "Number of people" option
If you come to work in the Netherlands
Are you a highly skilled migrant? Then another appointment option is available for you (and your partner and children). If you are from a country outside the European Union, you can schedule an appointment to collect your residence permit at the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) and register with the municipality of Nijmegen at the same time. For this appointment, you have go to Huize Heyendaal, Geert Grooteplein Noord 9, Nijmegen.
If you are a highly skilled migrant from a European Union country, you can also schedule a registration appointment at this location.
At Huize Heyendaal, you do not need to submit birth certificates, marriage certificates or other supporting documents. When making the appointment, you will see what you do need to bring.
Conditions
- You intend to live in the Netherlands for at least 4 months in the coming six months
- You have Dutch nationality or the nationality of a country in the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland. Alternatively, you have a valid residence permit
What you should bring with you
- Valid passport or identity card for you and your family members. And a valid residence permit if you do not have the nationality from a country in the EU, EEA, or Switzerland
- If you rent or have bought a house/room: a recent rental or purchase contract for the house/room where you want to be registered
- If you want to live with someone:
- Copy of the identity card or passport of the main resident with the signature of the main resident
- Completed consent form (92 KB) (in Dutch) by the person you will be living with
- If you already have them: foreign birth certificate(s) or other documents such as a marriage certificate. You can also submit these documents later if you don't already have them ready at the time of the appointment. The documents must meet the requirements for legalization and translation
- Are you from Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, or Sint Maarten? Bring proof of deregistration
Fees
No costs.
Citizen Service Number
Once you are registered, you will receive a Citizen Service Number (BSN). This will be sent to you by mail within 4 weeks after the appointment.
You need a BSN to manage matters with the Dutch government, such as applying for health insurance.
